Myfanwy Johns lives and works across the UK and France.

Her practice draws on her own everyday visual experiences and observations, inviting quiet connections with the viewer.

“I love transient moments, for example, how a ripple of sunlight flickers on a wall, or passes through foliage, equally, it could be the distortion created by a cast shadow.”

Landscape and gardens are recurring subjects, where she has often worked en plein-air. She is interested in how our perceptions can be altered by light, seasonal changes and our own emotional states.

“I enjoy the way a painting is physically constructed, how fluid paint occupies space and plays with flatness”.

Alongside this, her practice extends into object-based work and installation. Through collecting and arranging found materials, Johns has examined themes of history, obsolescence and material culture. The unearthed objects often discovered whilst gardening, reflect an interest in domestic archaeology and the narratives embedded within everyday materials.

Johns’ work has been exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in the UK and France. She was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the ING Discerning Eye exhibition in 2004. She is an inaugural member of Dialogue, an Anglo-French artist group; in 2020, Dialogue curated Human Nature: Nature Humaine, presented at the Talence Arts Centre and the Botanical Gardens in Bordeaux.
